First, decide and write down what you want.  The more details you can provide will enable any contractor to understand your needs and your desires.  Having things written down will also ensure that everything is done to your specifications.

When planning a project for the first time, be sure to have a specific schedule in mind.  Contractors often have multiple jobs in the queue and will not always be able to begin right away.  While having advance notice of a project is preferable, Larsen-Hoffman understands this isn’t always possible.  If not able to complete the work in the time allotted, we will be able to recommend another contractor to use.

Every state requires contractors to have licenses. Contractors will generally display their license number on advertising, on the sides of their trucks or on their website. Don’t be shy about asking them to provide the license and then verify it by visiting

Try to get at least three bids for your project.  Meet with the contractors in person at your home.  The contractor with the lowest or even the highest bid may not be the best choice for you and your home.  Keep in mind the distance a contractor has between his business and his projects, employee retention and training, and the size of his other projects.

Be sure each contractor bidding on your project provides their estimate in writing.  Along with a written estimate, Larsen-Hoffman also provides a detailed breakdown of the cost of the projected services and materials that will be used.
